A rich, smoky and slightly sweet bean dish made using barbecue flavours. Perfect as a side, dip, or filling for wraps and tacos.
Ingredients
- 1 tin (400g) black beans, drained and rinsed
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1½ tbsp Kursat’s South African BBQ Paste
- 2 tbsp Kursat’s Caramelised Onion Paste
- 1 tsp tomato paste
- 1 tsp brown sugar or honey
- 60ml water
- Salt and black pepper to taste
Method
- Heat olive oil in a saucepan over medium heat.
Add Kursat’s Caramelised Onion Paste and cook for 2–3 minutes until aromatic. -
Stir in Kursat’s South African BBQ Paste, tomato paste, sugar (or honey), and water or stock. Mix until fully combined.

Add the black beans and stir well to coat them evenly in the sauce.

Cook gently for 8–10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens and coats the beans.

Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Serve warm and garnish with fresh herbs if desired.
