French Onion Soup

A cosy, classic French onion soup with rich caramelized onion flavour using Kursat’s Caramelised Onion Paste. Topped with toasted bread and melted cheese, this simple recipe delivers traditional comfort with minimal effort.

Ingredients

  • 1 Jar of Kursat’s Caramelised Onion

  • 500ml beef or vegetable stock. - Alternatively mix 30g beef bovril with 500ml hot water.

  • 1 tbsp butter (30g)

  • 1 tbsp olive oil (15g)

  • 1 tsp fresh thyme leaves (or ½ tsp dried)

  • 1 tsp balsamic vinegar (optional, to enhance sweetness)

  • Salt and black pepper to taste

  • 2 slices crusty baguette or bread

  • 50g Gruyère, Emmental, or any preferred melting cheese, grated

  • 2 tbsp flour

Method

  1. Heat butter and olive oil in a saucepan over medium heat.
    Add Kursat’s Caramelised Onion Paste and cook gently for 2–3 minutes.
  2. Sprinkle in the flour and stir for 1–2 minutes to remove the raw taste.
  3. Pour in the stock, thyme, and balsamic vinegar.
    Simmer for 10–12 minutes to blend flavours. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

  4. Place sliced baguette into toaster.
  5. Ladle soup into oven-safe bowls. Top each with a slice of toasted bread and a generous sprinkle of cheese.
  6. Grill under high heat for 2–4 minutes until cheese is melted and slightly golden.
  7. Remove from the oven carefully. Serve immediately.
